9 African Movies Up For Oscar Best Film Award…But Which Country Produced Them?

Submissions for consideration for awards at the 91st Oscar Awards have closed, the world’s biggest film recognition event has announced. And of the eighty-seven [87] countries whose films are being considered for the Best Foreign Language Film category, nine [9] are African.

The 91st Oscar Awards event will not be held until February 24, 2019 but nine film directors from Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia- all North African nations, Malawi, Zambia and South Africa- all within Southern Africa, and one each from West and East Africa in the form of Niger and Kenya respectively have qualified for nominations. The movies will now be screened by a special selection of the Academy’s membership before official nominations are announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.

Africa’s last serious involvement at the Academy Awards was the nomination Mauritanian film Timbuktu earned in 2014 and you have to go as far back as 2005 to find Africa’s last win at the event- the South African film Tsotsi which was directed by Gavin Hood.

Only nine African movies have thus far earned nominations since the Best Foreign Language Film was introduced in 1957.

Algerian-French movie Z is officially recognized as the first film to win it for the continent in 1969, even though the 1976 Jean-Jacques Annaud-directed film, Black and White In Color, from Ivory Coast is considered ‘the truly first African winning film’.

The Best Foreign Language Film category of the Academy Awards is reserved for the best feature-length film motion picture produced outside the United States with a predominantly non-English dialogue track. It is accepted by the winning film’s director but it is considered an award for the winning country as a whole.

Out of the 68 awards given, 56 have been won by Europe. Africa only has 3 wins- from Algeria, Ivory Coast and South Africa.

And now Channeforafrica.com brings you the Directors, the Films and the African nations determined to change that narrative
