A ChannelForAfrica.com Report – Ghana’s movie industry is in a state of chaos after organizers slated the date for the country’s movie awards for December 23, 2018- less than a month since it announced the opening for submissions.
And now several movie industry stakeholders have lashed out at organizers for their shoddiness and irrationality, with several allegations of bias and conspiracy leveled against an event that has seen so much controversy over the past couple of years.
Zylofon Media took over the event a year ago but failed to match promise with delivery, prompting the event to revert to its founder and Chief Executive Officer; Fred Numah. Yet despite the perennial change in management, the infamy surrounding the Ghana Movie Awards remains a constant.
Last year, the Ghana Movie Awards failed to come off and this year organizers have failed to address questions relating to the rationale behind collating all film and performance submissions, as well as reviewing and performing credible technical analysis in less than 28 days.
On radio, ace Highlife singer, actress and panelist on Zylofon 102.1 FM, Paulina Oduro registered her disdain for an event which has long come under ridicule although still recognized as Ghana’s biggest film awards event. She shared a story from the past of how she only found out she had been nominated for an award at the last minute because organizers failed or forgot to inform her to cite the epitome of unprofessionalism and poor organization of some Ghanaian award events.
Yet more bizarre, organizers will review all films over the last couple of years for this year’s event – a development that seems rather unfathomable as it seems practically impossible to effectively screen and analyze all films produced over two years within just 28 days. Other reports also allege that selected movie personalities have already participated in a Photoshoot as a grand ploy to front certain nominees (even before nominations are announced).
The 2018 Ghana Movie Awards will come off at the Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel and Channel For Africa will be updating our user community of further developments, including all nominees for all categories, as soon as available.
